  2. market. To improve your products' quality, you have to invest in
  3. R&D to find new ways to produce better products.

  10. In this lesson, you will learn how to set up an R&D center, start
  11. R&D projects, and apply the research results to your business.

  15. First, choose a location for your R&D center. You are recommended
  16. to choose a suburban location, for its low land cost and
  17. availability of labour. Click the "Continue Tutorial" button when
  18. you are done.

  37. You can set up a maximum of nine R&D units in an R&D center. They
  38. can work independently as nine separate teams or be linked
  39. into a large team for increased performance.

  42. too aggressive or too conservative towards R&D.

  70. Now the R&D team is ready to start research. All they need is
  71. your direction. Click the "leader" unit, which has connections to
  72. all other R&D units in the team.

  76. Click the "R&D Technology" button. Then you will be asked to
  77. select the type of product to research and the duration of the
  78. R&D plan. Answer "Beer" and "3 Years" respectively.

  80. Upon receipt of your order, your team of scientists immediately
  81. start the research. However, there won't be any solid results
  82. until the R&D plan is complete.

  85. Now, let's look at the information area. It displays the
  86. no. of months since the R&D plan began and the duration of
  87. the R&D plan in months. These two numbers tell you the status
  88. of the R&D plan.

  91. The next two lines show the technology level before the R&D plan
  92. started and the expected technology level when the R&D plan is
  93. complete.

  109. The technology report shows information about your corporation's
  110. R&D plans. The "Top Tech." column, displays the highest level of
  111. technology ever used in production of the product.

  114. In the beginning of the game, the top technology level of all
  115. products is 100. When a product with a higher technology level
  116. hits the market, the top technology level is updated accordingly.

  118. The top technology level is closely related to product quality.
  119. Launching a product with an unprecedented technology level into
  120. the market can cause the existing products to become inferior.
  121.  
  122. For example, if your technology level for beer production is 50,
  123. and the top technology is 100, your product gains 27 quality
  124. points in production. (55% of beer quality is determined by
  125. production, so 55 X 50 / 100 = 27.) If the top technology were
  126. 200, the result would be much different. Your product could gain
  127. only 50 X 50 / 200 = 13 quality points in the product part.

  129. Thus, a high production technology level does not guarantee a
  130. high quality rating, unless the technology level of your factory
  131. is close to the top technology level.

  138. When a research is complete, you can apply the results, that is
  139. the improved production technology, to your manufacturing units.
  140. You find the "Upgrade Tech" button in your manufacturing
  141. units that are eligible for a technology upgrade. Press the
  142. button to upgrade the production facilities of the unit to the new
  143. technology and enable manufacture of better-quality products.
  144. However, the unit's productivity may drop as the workers adapt to
  145. the new production facilities.

  147. R&D is critical to the success of a manufacturing business, but
  148. you have to figure out yourself how to go about it. Now you are
  149. ready to move on to the next lesson.
